Interview with ...a Pirate!

I had the opportunity to share some words with one passionate of rum
Clément from the MORMIEBEN crew.

The pirate metal band will release their debut EP within four days and then, I thought that would be a fine time to dig them better. :) Here is the interview :

01. Hi! The bandpage for your band has been freshly added on Sword Chant. Can you describe us what is MORMIEBEN ?
Hi Dragonhead and thank you for the add to Sword Chant, it’s really great! There are only a few websites like yours and what you do is wonderful so keep going on !
Regarding MORMIEBEN, we are a Pirate Metal Band created in 2011 but which permanent line-up stabilized on 2014. So, we are a proud-pirates crew which just wants to share its love to music, beer and rum!

02. So, you play Pirate metal. What do you like about pirates ?
Rum of course!
Ok, let’s be serious! We do enjoy historical aspect of the Piracy. It was a wonderful age where the idea of Freedom was omnipresent. We wanted to do something folklore, really festive, etc… But we wanted this different from things we can find in Folk/Pagan Metal. Sailor songs and this entire universe take us to do what we are currently doing. At the beginning, we played for fun, but now it is going further and takes a lot of our time!

03. Can you give us details regarding the band and tell us how did the band start to found, step by step ?
Also, your first release was “De la Terre à la Mer“ demo in 2013 and available in digital but is it also available on compact disc ?
As I already said, at the beginning we were doing it for fun. Then things became serious more. Regarding the history of the band it has been created in 2011 with Gobrian, Josselin and Jordan. At the beginning it was something more Punk/Folk (teenage spirit). But we have quickly gone out of this universe because we were bored. Then we took the band name Mormieben (Sons of the Seas in Breton) and we decided to play Pirate Metal. We recorded a first demo to show what we do, and this is how “De la Terre à la Mer” was born. We made 100 compact disc of this one (we just have a few now). Then, in 2013, Nicolas joined us as solo guitarist and in 2014 Quentin joined us for bass and flutes. So it takes time to stabilize, to find what we really want to do and that everyone find is own place. But now it’s done we are more motivated than ever! :)

04. September 19th will be released your debut EP entitled “Hissons le Pavillon” available for pre-orders. What are the lyrics about ?
The main topics are pirate life, rum, boarding, fights, beer, pleasures of the flesh… And so on.
The song Hissons le Pavillon deals with a boarding, Le Principal Défaut deals with our bigger flaw… Rum! (yes one more time), Tavernier deals with a friend of us who had to stay on the ground after he’s been injured during a fight and so he opened his own tavern, Le Vent qui Hurle deals with a storm (love), and Pirate life (Ndlr: La Vie de Forban)… I think you can guess!

05. So, this is the tracklist (with my translations) :

01. Hissons le Pavillon (Pull up/Hoist the flag)
02. Le Principal Défaut (The main flaw)
03. Tavernier (Innkeeper)
04. Le Vent qui Hurle (Screaming wind)
05. La Vie de Forban (Pirate life)

…What is your main flaw ? :)
Rum of course! Yes, we really speak a lot about that one… But what can I do when it appears the best one?!

06. Can you define us how is MORMIEBEN life? What is it ?
As for every pirate crew life on board of the MORMIEBEN, life is not always pink! But this is Freedom’s price! We are adventurers over the seas, plundering, but we are also musicians! It is true that our crew is composed of many artists! All crazier and clever each other! But we love them all because they are the big family of MORMIEBEN! We sail on the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean seas for the main since we love meetings with some other pirate friends, within a bottle of rum!

07. I think one official video taking place in a tavern, will see the daylight, soon. Can you share your experience while the making of that video ?
Yes, that’s right, we are going to release a video clip taking place in the Dock Yard, a Pirate Pub in Nantes, FR,  where there was a big battle… This video will be shown in a preview at our release party and will be online the following day.
Regarding the experience of making a video we can say we laughed a lot, this wasn’t easy at all but it was great! There were a lot of Pirate Friends fighting each other and we didn’t thought they will be so many to answer our call ! And we are grateful to them

08. TOTER FISCH and AGONY OF THE BLEEDING FLESH will play on your release party. Have you already shared the stage with these bands ?
No, we never shared stages with them yet. These are bands that we follow, we have already heard about them but nothing more until now. We have discovered them when we had to find some “Pirate” bands for our release party

09. Have you shared the stage with some other bands ?
Yes, of course, we have shared the stage with many bands. But not that much in the Folk/Pagan Metal style. We shared the stage with Drenaï, Waverly Lies North, Season of Tears or Veliocasses… We have some upcoming gigs with other Folk/Pagan metal bands.

10. What are your plans after the release party ?
After this release party we have a few gigs planned. We are looking for moving around Nantes, to share our music. We have some other plans to play to Angers, Tours, Bordeaux, Rennes, Lorient, Paris… (France) but none of them is planned for now. We are opened to all offers so don’t hesitate to contact us for upcoming shows, MORMIEBEN is here!
Besides gigs, we are already working on new songs for a possible album… But we have time for this one! :)

Thanks for the interview!
Thanks to you and keep up the good work!
