ANCESTRUM interview online

I interviewed the guitar player, founder and composer, Mortem, from the band ANCESTRUM hailing from Argentina.

This interview deals with "Our Heathen Soil", the forthcoming album of the band, for the main.

01. Hi Mortem! ANCESTRUM founded late 2008 and has got several line-up change until now… How did you manage this issue everytime ?
Hi Kissy, well... we've got some pretty tough times with musicians coming and going, specially with drummers. But I formed this band along with vocalist and eventually bassist Asteroth and we are the core of Ancestrum, so the other ones really can come and go and it won't affect the band at all.  In the past we had to cancel some gigs due to some member leaving the band, but we always find a replacement in the end so we can carry on with this journey.

02. Your music focus on Black/Pagan metal, are you Pagan ?
We consider ourselves pagans, but on our way. We are clearly not vikings, celts or whatever heathen belief you wanna call it, although we share some connection in determinated topics with Nordic mythology. We actually worship nature in the most basic way, just as Norse people did, for example, bringing a name, a story and sometimes a face to any element of nature they wanted to worship. The sea, the mountains, thunder, snow. Same with war, death, end of the world and so on. Well, we do the same, but on our terms. I think you don't have to consider yourself a follower or a true believer of Norse, Celtic, Summerian, Slavic or Greek mythology to be a pagan. Just rejecting God and following nature makes you a pagan from head to toe.

03. Misanthropic Spirit records will release your second album entitled “Our Heathen Soil” soon. Where will it be available for order ?
For direct order you can go to www.misanthropicspirit.net . It also will be available in many distros wolrdwide, like in South America, Europe, USA, Japan and Australia.

04. What is about this second full length ?
This album is about nature, in what we have around on this very last and southernmost part of the planet. We have mountains, rivers, seas, coasts, forests, snow and ice. That is our inspiration and what we are, and that's what we sing about. The landscapes are a very important part of Ancestrum, so are some stories we picture that may have or not actually occured. That's up to everyone's imagination.

05. “Our Heathen Soil” was planned to be released last year but you needed more times due to arrangements there & the addition of keyboard lines. Weren’t you satisfied earlier ?
Not fully satisfied, no. I think the album was great, the songs were amazing but I also felt that something was missing. I called former Ancestrum's keyboardist Asphodel and asked him to write some keys lines here and there. He came up with lines for the full album and it just felt so right. We loved how it finally ended up. It added the atmosphere and the feeling that the album needed to fullfill the picture I had in my mind when I first started to write this record. And of course, we are very happy to have him back in the band.

06. Did the line-up change affect the recordings for this album ?
It actually did. The first thing you will notice if you compare it with "Spells By The Northern Winds" is the double-kick drums hammering your head. On that album we wanted to experiment with a more primitive sound adding a single kick drummer. It worked on that time, but for this record we were looking for a different sound. Less primitive and more aggressive, and I think we made it. Also the keyboards changed a lot the final product, just how I previously mentioned. That's it when it comes to line-up changes. But there's also some significant changes on the clean vocals, taking more protagonism and contributing with really amazing melodic lines that severly affected the album in the most positive way.

07. Looking at the artwork, are they the swords in Norway ?
Exactly. I was living and playing in Norway for 8 years, and I was always impressed with those swords. I wanted to use them on the album's cover as a symbol of the union and brotherhood the four members have. Like... this is our land, our soil, our realm, and these are our beliefs... so here we proudly stand tall and we are not going anywhere nor giving up. That's the concept we wanted for the artwork and I think it represents Ancestrum in a whole concept.

08. Any guest on the new record ?
Yes, for this album we got Demolition on all the drums, who is a friend of ours. He did an impressive work. We also got Asphodel on keyboards as i mentioned before. He was Ancestrum keyboardist on the "Paganstorm" era. He left the band because he moved to other town some hundred kilometers far from us, but we are very happy to have him adding those unbelievable atmospheres to the album. And last but not least, we have vocalist Dany Tee, from In Element, Seelenmord, Overtide; doing some amazing screams on the song "Spirits Of Unreal". He's a close friend and an awesome singer. I highly recommend people to check out his work.

09. Do you plan some concerts in Argentina and abroad ?
Yes, this year we will focus on Argentina and hopefully Brazil and Chile, promoting "Our Heathen Soil". It's a big country and it takes time to tour it. Specially since our last tour was like 2 or 3 years ago.

10. Do you plan to tour Europe in 2015 ?
Not in 2015, but we are planning to visit Europe in the future. Hope we can do it in 2016, so if any promoter want us to play there, can just get in touch with us. We have plans to tour South America as well. This 2015 we will tour here in Argentina and some neighbour countries in support for our new album, but we are very excited to go and tour Europe too. It's something we have pending with our european fans.

11. What means “Ancestrum” for you ?
It's the band that fullfills my dreams and who I am. The summary of over 25 years playing music in many different countries. I have put everything I got in this band being the tool to express myself.

12. Can you define the bandname ?
Ancestrum is latin for "ancestor" or " forefather". It symbolizes the concept of the band. Back to our roots, whatever they are, to were our blood's journey begun.

13. Thank you for the interview! Last words are yours.
