Interview with E-AN-NA

I interviewed E-AN-NA who recently released their debut album titled "Nesfârşite".

01. Welcome E-an-na ! First of all, what is the meaning of the band name ?
It literally means « The home of the skies » in ancient summerian. It is a whole new, separate world that we’ve created to escape this one. Every soul is welcome.

02. The band started as a studio project back in 2014 and became a full line-up band ready for shows…. How and when did it happen exactly ?
The songs we started putting out at the beginning received more attention & positive feedback than we would’ve ever expected. People started requesting shows a lot, and as a consequence, 2016 was our first busy year.

03. So, E-an-na is one of those bands which started to be famous, thanks to Youtube and internet, right ?
I think so, yes. We were very fortunate in this regard.

04. How did you feel in that time ?
Like not having a clue what we’re doing. We didn’t have any plans back then, every idea was just shot at us by people wanting to work with us. It was a stage of total freedom, which comes ever harder as you grow & try to improve yourself. We still manage to access that maddening freedom, but in a more restricted way. And by that I mean more in the music, but less in the rest of our daily lives.

05. Back in 2016 was released your very first EP titled « Jiana », do you know what are the favorites tracks for most of your fans ?
Yeah, Codru for sure.
We can’t leave a show without playing that one because they won’t let us. Sârbă Ciobănească does pretty well too.

06. What are the songs about, overall ?
The Jiana songs are a bit more disparated than the Nesfârşite ones. Each deals with it’s one specific theme and there’s not a lot of connection, really. On the other hand, I genuinely see E-AN-NA as more than music so for each track we release, you’ll be able to find an associated conceptual description (on YouTube, Bandcamp and so on).

07. Today, you released your debut album « Nesfârşite », what means the title ?
It is not quite literally translatable to english, but it is something along the lines of « Things without an end ».

08. Is it a concept album ?
Partially. Lyrically I wouldn’t say so, because again, we cover a whole bunch of topics, and although they are somewhat more close to eachother than on Jiana, I wouldn’t say it’s a storyline that flows from song to song (from time to time that happens too, though). From a conecptual and musical point of view, I see it as a collection of subsets that go well with eachother, and those are grouped the following way :

Viu + Aer
Fiecare gest al nostru + Epitaf
Pielea + Pânda
Frica + Zadar + Izbândă & a râvni
Apele Îngheţate + iO.tă + În frânt
Mashiara is the lonewolf.

09. How does it musically sound ?
Complex, covering a bunch of styles, without losing it’s E-AN-NA sound nevertheless.

10. Do you have many shows planned ?
Yep, we have a whole tour to promote our new album this autumn. You can find the dates here :

11. What are your next projects with the band ?
Honestly, we believe Nesfârşite was a step forward, towards something that nobody else has done. We will keep trying to push barriers.
