The very first VAILOS interview !

I interviewed a new band hailing from Kraków, Poland. Their name is VAILOS.

01. Hi Monika, hurdy gurdist of the band, why that bandname ?

I was thinking for a long time about the right name. I’ve always wanted it to be connected with wolves, as I have always been fascinated with these mysterious creatures, so I’ve decided VAILOS will be the best one.  It means ‘wolf’ in ancient Celtiberian and Proto-Indo-European language. It also is short, sounds nice and is easy to remember, what is a huge advantage.

02. When was founded the band and how did the idea emerge ?
The band in its current form was founded at the end of 2021 (that’s why sometimes we put that number above our picture logo), but the work had started much earlier. I am the main founder of the band, I worked very hard on estabilishing it. We had many difficulties in finding right line-up, for few years many people were joining only to go away, but here we are! That cost me much energy and effort, but it was totally worth it ! I’m really proud of what the band becomes, the bound which members share is something amazing and unique and that’s just the beginning of our journey !

03. Lately, you shared some live videos from one show in Krakow, PL Have you got positive feedbacks from that show and from the people on the web ?
Yes, we recieved much positive comments on the web and just after the show as well, not only from the audience, but from other bands too. Such feedback gave us huge motivation for further work.

04. You are many members in the band, can you introduce them ?
Sure ! Here are :
Yanitta: clean vocals
Wojtek: rhythm guitar
Maks: lead guitar, growls
Me (Monika): hurdy gurdy
Marek: drums

This is just the core of the band. We are planing to add some more instruments, like keyboard or flute, so other members are yet to join.

05. What are their favorite bands ?
Our taste in music is very varied ! Our favourite bands are :

Yanitta: Muse, Blackbriar
Wojtek: Blind Guardian, Stratovarius, Rhapsody, Ensiferum
Maks: Vildhjarta, Sleep Token , First Fragment, The Ocean
Me (Monika): Eluveitie, Cellar Darling, Heilung, Demon Hunter
Marek: Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Cream, Rainbow, Wasp
But these are just few of many more.

06.So, you play hurdy gurdy. How did you start with hurdy gurdy ?
Hurdy gurdy is the first instrument I learned to play few years ago. It all began because of Eluveitie and Anna Murphy. That unique instrument intrigued me and I fell in love with it

07. Can you describe us the intrument ? What do you like the most ?
Hurdy gurdy is a bowed instrument, it works kinda like a violin, but instead of a bow you have the wheel, which moves by tuning the handle. You put down the string on the wheel and it makes a sound. The hurdy gurdy have the tangents and keys which you press to change the note height.

It's unique, ancient sound, the many playing possibilities the instrument can give. It can have drone strings, which make deep, constant background sound. You also have trompette strings, which allow you to give characteristic beat pattern

08. I think that you are working on your first carved music, do you plan to release an EP or demo ?
Yes, our debut EP will be released very soon! We even work on another record, an album but it is in initial phase right now.

09. Do you have a title for the upcoming EP ? How many tracks there ?
The EP’s title is ‘Battle Queen’ and there will be 6 tracks : 5 original songs and 1 cover of popular song in our own folk-metal arrangment.

10. Can you share the track listing or is it too early ?
Here is the track listing :
  1. The Call
  2. Into The Wilderness
  3. Trinoxtion Samonii
  4. Song of Freedom
  5. Boudicca
  6. The Riddle (Nik Kershaw cover)

11. What are the lyrics and songs about ?
As we say on our pages, we try to connect whole celtic world. Our lyrics mostly focus on culture, history, mythology and legends of the Celtic people all across the Europe.
  • Boudicca is about calling to start the revolt of Boudicca- the ancient queen of Iceni tribe
  • Trinoxtion Samonii is about ancient gaulish festival of beginning of a new year
  • Song of Freedom is about celtic love of independency and protecting it by all cost
  • Into the Wilderness tells a celtic myth of creation of Pyrenees
  • The Call is instrumental

12. Can you share the artwork with Sword Chant ?
The artwork shows our imaging of Boudicca riding a chariot in her rage

13. Do you have some shows coming soon ?
Of course we do. We plan to play some shows in Poland, we even got the invitation to perform abroad, in country far away from here… But let that remain a secret for now 😊
